Illuminated Custom Fireplace Mantel
My inspiration for this piece was the numerous days and weeks I have enjoyed in our Northern Michigan swamps where a spring born brook may meander. The illuminated black spruce along with the full moon depict a concrete visual while the carved white cedar gives an abstract touch of a brook bubbling over smooth river rock.
The Custom Fireplace Mantel shown above is a 12” deep by 14” in height x 7’ long. It weighs 200lbs. Additional sizes are available by request.
My goal with the rifle stock and recurve bow carvings was to express a "woodzy" appearance. Along with the antler inlays I carved into the wood the texture of a deer antler. I then stained each piece with a "1 Step" Minwax satin finish followed by several coats of car wax.
For the inlays I can use my own antler cross sections or you may choose to have your own antlers to personalize your gun, rifle, or bow.

While attending a weekly Bible study at a friend's house a vision was revealed to me. The friend I speak of has a beautiful 10 acre wood lot where much of her time is spent with God. It is her "Safe Place" here on Earth. My vision was a carved Cross in our friend's wood lot.
I know that God was speaking to me. God was saying, carve It and they will come, they will come to Me.
Our friend holds numerous gatherings that are Church affiliated. Often there are times set aside for quiet sessions that are spent praying and listening to God. I truly believe that God was telling me to offer a carved Cross to our friend for the opportunity of bringing His people closer to Him and even more important would be to bring those to Him who don't know Him.
So, the vision was clear; Get the OK from our friend and begin designing and creating the carved Cross. The OK was an emotional moment for our friend and the building and carving were extremely emotional and life changing for me.
I have a habit of taking just one last look at my current piece as I turn out the light to my studio. That's the vision I hold onto till the next time the piece and I meet.
Well, as the cross progressed and I placed the cross members together, a chill would run throughout my entire body as I reached for the light switch. It was a warm chill, a good chill, a comforting chill. I know what was happening; the Cross was beginning to take on life. The whole story of the Crucifixion was becoming more real to me. I realized that not only had God given me this vision of the Cross
in the woods for others to experience, He also gave me the vision for me to grow in my walk, my journey here on Earth with God.
The cross is finished and placed in that 10 acre wood lot. I pray that it will touch lives today and for all of the tomorrows.
I thank you God for this vision and the talents you have blessed me with to carve such a heartfelt gift for our friend.
